To bring any of you that are left following out there up to speed....
We got engaged over the Christmas Holiday. It was very intimate and very sweet, and unexpected. He was so nervous it was adorable. I did the girlie bit and cried and said "yes".

We've been doing a little wedding planning here and there and I'm sure I will share more later... but how cute are these darn wedding invitations? A record player? Seriously? I'm trying to think of what song I would use...
needless to say I am in love.

Even though I've been sick all week, all I really wanted to do was spend New Years in our warm little house snuggled up with my boyfriend and our dog.
I've never been one to want to deal with all the mass hoopla that happens on the eve, but these photos are making me feel differently for this upcoming new year... I can dream for net year, but until then I've some laundry and a New Years Day dinner to prepare. We're having some black eyed peas, my Grandmother always says they're good luck.

Have been an absolute blur... and this blog as well as my etsy updates have paid the consequences!!
I played host to some out of town friends and was able to play tourist in my own city, eat lots of yummy foods, go to neighborhood bars to listen to music and stay up way past my bed time.
The boyfriend and I have also adopted a little rescue pup from the shelter. We had been looking for a while, and finally found her. She's quite the handful but loves us dearly and is going to grow up to be the most well mannered lil dog. I can feel it.

My favorite gelato/sorbet place is here in the city. They post their flavors of the day daily.. and they are always mouth watering! I swear.
For instance...

*Cucumber with Grey Goose Vodka
Clean, refreshing, cucumber sorbetto blended with Grey Goose Vodka.
* Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla
We have tried every type of vanilla bean and this was my favorite. Gelato is low fat and needs a special type of vanilla.
* Mojito
Tart lime, cool Overbrook Herb Farm mint and rum.
* Pompelmo Rosso con Campari
Ruby Red Grapefruit with Campari

This is just a sampling. It's ridiculously good!

upstate NY

I got off the plane from California and almost immediately jumped right back in the car for a little road trip to upstate NY. Our friend was sponsoring a Terry Gilliam triple feature at a historic theatre up there. They had gotten the 35mm prints for Time Bandits, Life of Brian, and Brazil. The theatre was restored and quite beautiful, she still had lots of charm left in her. We were able to do some running around, attempted to ride horses, hit an antique shop and saw some friends. Great little weekend away from home.

Weekend Road Trip

I'm still in LA, but am anxious to fly home and jump right in the car for a weekend road trip with my boyfriend. We're headed upstate NY to see some family & friends and to partake in a movie night that our friend has scheduled at one of the local theatres.
I'm sure I will pass out the moment I buckle my seatbelt, as I have a tendency to do in these matters (don't worry I wont be the one driving!) and magically wake as we are pulling into his parents driveway.
I'm already making up our shopping list, I'm sure you can hear audible groans all the way from Philadelphia (he's not much of a shopper, but he's always game for explorin).
I love road trips.

This hotel room in LA has been my home away from home for almost week now. One more to go and I'm back to my little brick house and a shower that doesn't leak all over the bathroom floor. The weather here has been quite chilly. My dresses and sandals have not left my suitcase.
Went out with the girls to a little bar in hollywood (The Den). Was hoping to spot Jason Segel as it's one of his haunts. Guess it just wasn't our night. But the food & drinks were quite good, and the place was quaint and relaxed quite a different atmosphere from the other joints on the strip.

My Mom came to visit us before I left for LA. It was so great to be able to spend some time with her. We weren't able to see/do as much as we had hoped. But she was able to help me out with some projects around the house as well as give me some gardening advice. We took a little trip down to Terrain and I treated her to brunch at their cafe. It's all farm fresh and so incredibly yummy. I can't wait for an excuse to go back.

we're off to the city this weekend. i worked in nyc for many years and haven't been back since i moved to philadelphia to be with my boyfriend. we're going to celebrate my birthday since i was away in california when it came. he got us tickets to see "a behanding in spokane" with Christopher Walken & Sam Rockwell. i am beside myself that we are going to see them live. i plan on taking my love all over the city... riding the subway, eating cupcakes & banana pudding at sugar sweet sunshine, grabbing drinks at the bodega, strolling in central park, going for a lovely dinner, coffee breaks, riding in cabs, some light shopping, and getting back my nyc walk... it's lost it's speed.

Unfortunately I will not be watching the Academy Awards tonight, other responsibilities call.
The boyfriend and I saw Casablanca for valentine's day at this theatre in PA that was built in 1903, they had a really cute ballot box where we were able to cast our Oscar votes. We had different opinions on a couple, it will be interesting to see who "wins". Cinematography aside Oscar night is all about the fashion, and here are some of my favorite gowns from the past couple of years.

I love Penelope Cruz in this Ralph Lauren dress from the 74th Academy Awards. Open back, cascading sequin train.. let's face it, she is stunning. Her Oscar dress from last year was jaw dropping as well. Vintage Balmain... *swoon*

Maggie Gyllenhaal is exuding Hollywood glamour in this Proenza Schouler dress at the 79th Academy.

Love the color, the one shouldered top and the banded waist. It's fitted and it's perfection.

And the all time favorite...

Michelle WIlliams. First of all, who said blondes shouldn't wear yellow?!? That person was clearly mistaken. She is GORGEOUS in this canary yellow Vera Wang vintage inspired dress. Everything from the done but undone hair to the jewelry selection to the makeup is sheer perfection. Love Love Love her.

I've been in LA for almost a week, and I've another week to go until I am back on the east coast and sleeping in my own bed. It's a lovely Spring day and I am off to explore southern CA and hopefully find that elusive motherload. One of the places on today's itinerary supplies a lot of the set and costuming for Mad Men. E X C I T E D! I'm sure it will be out of the price range for store shopping, but I'm ok with drooling and maybe picking up some things for me :)

If I had the opportunity to pick one woman who would style or design for me on a daily basis, without hesitation I would choose Edith Head. The woman had *impeccable* taste bar none.

Sought after by the upper echelon of the Hollywood elite, she designed for the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Barbara Stanwyck and countless others. During the course of her career she won 8 oscars (more than any other woman) and was nominated for 35 Academy Awards. She was quite the busy lady.

This woman was responsible for creating the iconic "Hitchcock Blondes". Being both a blonde and a huge Hitchcock fan (our vintage namesake is in his honor) I can't help but show just the slightest amount favor to her work in his movies.

I'm sure you all are aware of the nor-easter (seriously, who made up that word??) that swept the north east. It caused a great amount of havoc, and made normal daily activities almost obsolete. But it did provide with some sleeping in, and opportunity to get lost in some good ole movie watchin.
If you're not familiar with this snowy season, you might not know that it creates some of the most beautiful light ever. Moonlit snow creates this warm glow that just radiates through your windows. I swear every time I ventured into our bathroom I had to proclaim it's beauty. I tried to capture some of it's majesty through our windows.

Our friend Ron Knigge makes cakes. Now, to even use the work "make" when it comes to his cake skills is truly doing his talent an injustice. He doesn't "make" cakes, he laboriously creates works of art. A former professional skateboarder turned French Culinary Institute graduate, Ron has been designing edible works of art for confectionary connoisseurs since 2007. Even catching the eye and the palette of Miss Dita Von Teese. His hand-painted colors and intricate detailing are downright awe-inspiring. A perfect focal point to any wedding or celebration.

these images make me really happy on this bright and sunny snow day. i've started the laundry and let the boy sleep in. i will wake him with coffee and these yummy sweet crispy breads i found at the market the other day. then i will contemplate the next move with my hair (to dye or not to dye) and finally hang the living room curtains. then possibly take a hike through this winter wonderland to our friends house just because.

I've been doing a lot of lurking the internet lately -- mostly looking at pictures of Audrey Hepburn and the photography of Willy Maywald and Mark Shaw (they seem to all go hand-in-hand).

Mark Shaw just fascinates me -- and his photographs are beautiful. The women, the clothing, the styling, are all so perfect! I love all the long gloves and mid-length sleeves. Some of my favorite images and what I could find about them are below.

Photographer, Mark Shaw is best known for his extraordinary work documenting family scenes of the J.F. Kennedy's, capturing the private glamour of America's Camelot. Prior to his work with the Kennedy's, Shaw was renowned for defining an era with his much-lauded but long-forgotten fashion photography.

Shaw was afforded an unusual proximity to the models and designers of the 1950's and 1960's, allowing for a rare look behind the highly stylized presentation of fashion in the period. His work allows the viewer a true sense of the humanity behind what became archetypes of glamour.

Weekend Shop Update

I'm starting to get the house together a little bit more. George and I bought a *super* cute 1920's row home this past September and while we were fortunate to not have to do much work to it at all, I'm just now getting around to hanging curtains and making decisions on where to hang things.

I have such a problem with commitment when it comes to the house. I need the painting to go in the *perfect* spot or I'm waiting to find that piece of furniture that is *just* right. I'm not that obsessive, but I'm just so happy to have something that is finally ours, I just want to make it look the best possible.

So I'm going to nurse this cold and wake up early and head to the Antique Market tomorrow and fingers are crossed that I can find a dresser for the bedroom that compliments my 1920's upright one we already own.

It is a wonderful life.

It's been an incredible week here in Los Angeles. I've barely slept & have the bags to show for it (literal and hypothetical). I found some amazing spots to visit on my next trip out here. And my cold/flu is finally on it's way out. My bags (multiple) are packed and I'm on my way to the Philadelphia snow and thankfully a warm house. I long to sleep this weekend away, but I'm incredibly anxious to get all these finds shot and listed for the store (amd spend some time with my George). Until then...

I had the pleasure of viewing 500 Days of Summer the other night (via the tiny screen of my ipod). It was smart, well shot, had a great indie soundtrack, and stared Zooey Deschanel.

Can I just say she is adorable??! I love her quirky style & think her singing voice is quite endearing.

* Happy New Year *

I cannot believe it is almost 2010. This year was a milestone for me; George & I bought our first house, I finally started up my dream business (with the help of my best friend), relentless travel, and lots & lots of hospital visits (none mine).

I can only hope that this next year is just as splendid, (minus the hospital part).

I'm never one to make New Years Resolutions. One I find it somewhat "silly" that it takes a new year for the betterment of one's being, and two something such a strong personal statement such as a "resolution" always seems to be taken so lightly and discarded just weeks into the new year.

But in a year of firsts, I am going to give it a go.

Hopefully I won't be one of those that falls by the wayside. Here are some that I can only strive to adhere to.

* visit the theatre more often
* actually use my gym membership :)
* spend my dollars wiser
* get that basement organized!!!
* get my passport & take a REAL vacation

A big thank you to our friends & family who have always believed in us, and to our customers & friends for making our first month and a half a success!!

Upon feeling terribly ill on Monday, I cozied my self up on the sofa for a little How to Marry a Millionaire staring Grable, Bacall, & Monroe. If you've yet to see it, do yourself a favor and do so. Not only are the clothes jaw dropping-ly gorgeous, the sets are impeccable and it's a fun little satirical romp on the female gender when it comes to relationships.
I've always thought Lauren Bacall to be drop dead gorgeous. Always a vision of perfection paired with that sultry deep voice. She seemed like a gal that knew what she wanted.
It seemed almost fortuitous that tonight I happen to catch Bacall on Bogart in which Bacall speaks on Humphrey's life & films (including the many they stared in together).

A post on Lauren and her beauty would be anything less than fitting.

My Grandmother, part one.

I was able to, through some rather unfortunate circumstances, spend some quality time with my Grandmother (Mary) this past week. She is an amazing woman of 91. But truth be told, it wasn't until her 90th birthday that we actually knew her age (she always told us she was 19 or 21!). Her "Mama" lived by the philosophy that a woman should never tell her age, and she didn't. "Mama" was in fact buried with only her date of death on her tombstone. How cheeky.
My Mary is the greatest story teller I've ever met. She is the perfect hostess, well spoken and well traveled. And has always had amazing penmanship (everything in perfect loopy cursive!!). She's someone I admire greatly and who I aspire to be.

If I could be defined by an aesthetic of a store alone, it would be here. Anthro. is a store that I want my own home to feel like. There's something so magical, inspiring, and warm that envelopes me when I walk through those doors.

Finding Warmth.

This weekend we're expecting our first possible snowfall of the year. I can feel it coming. The last few days I've been basking in the warmth and glow of my fireplace.
I left the south almost 8 years ago, and have no relocation remorse. The pace, the scenery and the seasons of the north were so foreign to me. The people were dressed sharper and seemed more worldly, it was as if they knew things.
The beauty of being a new northerner was my wide-eyed, childhood excitement in the things that most took for granted. I'm looking forward to, as I do every year, the first snowfall and everything the season brings with it. (just as long as it doesn't interfere with my weekend plans)

As December 1st is right around the corner all I can think about is kitschy Christmas decorations and gearing up for the holidays! Christmas is such a magical holiday for me. With so much of its meaning in tradition, vintage ornaments speak to that. As I was out and about last night, I started thinking about the Christmas tree at my mother's house and how all the ornaments that grace our tree are special and tell a story. Some were made by my sister and I as kids, some were given to her by my grandmother and great-grandmother and some she picked up at a flea market -- but all tell a story.

Here's some of my favorite holiday decor photos, many of which have inspired whats in my own home and remind me of things I had growing up. Enjoy and check out the links for more!

All things sparkly...

George's Mother brought out some amazing costume jewelry left to her by her Aunt while we were in town this weekend, and we stumbled across this gorgeous piece of Democratic history. Sparkles, and rhinestones, and Kennedy. Wonderful!! I can't wait to wear it on my coat or on a little knit hat.

I love a piece of sparkle, especially during the Holidays! You can just "get away with" more this time of the year.

Since Under Capricorn is based out of Philadelphia, what better way to be inspired other than by the City of Brotherly Love's most famous piece of cinematography. Rocky.

But by the lovely Adrian (Talia Shire). Whom we'd like to mention is Jason Schwartzman's mother. Thumbs up.

Her character in Rocky embraces lots of textures and layers. Fabulous coats, great knit caps, and not to mention those amazing eye glasses...

(see, aren't they gorgeous??)

Adrian is painstakingly shy, and Rocky talks incessantly to try and fill those awkward moments of silence. It's quite endearing.

The weather has been very wet and not all together that inviting to venture out. So I've taken up refuge on my comfy sofa and said "to heck" with all things productive today. The laundry and dishes are forgiving, and thankfully so is George. (He's nestled up on the other sofa, saving the universe hah).

The above is a clip from Charlie Chaplin's "The Kid" that I had the absolute pleasure of watching for the first time last night. It paints a beautiful picture of the love between a father and his child. I was moved and enamored with the story/characters for the entire (albeit way too short) 50 mins. I wanted more.

I'm not used to writing often, or even daily. So have patience. Things on this end have been hectic; between travel, trying to get the store up and running and George's accident I haven't been as diligent as I would have wished.

We found a mouse in our house (and frankly, I don't do well with those things)..

which led to George's mishap

which then resulted in surgery and immobility for a couple months!

It's really a sad state of affairs. But he has remained incredibly positive, it's honestly been quite of an inspiration. As much as he hurts and is frustrated by the situation, he never complains. I need to be more mindful of those things in my own life at times.

So, in an effort to promote better bone density and overall health I've been trying to be mindful of what we've been consuming. (Halloween doesn't count though, because that was nothing short of UN-healthy!)

I found an amazing recipe online for Kale chips. They're incredibly fast and easy, and semi potato chip crunchy. I think they're wonderful.

I bought this bulletin board on High Street Market's etsy site. I love it, and cannot wait to hang it over my antique secretary desk. High Street always has amazing finds, and they're based here in the City of Brotherly love.

My George has fallen on hard times and is laid up on the couch recuperating, so I've been spending my time by keeping busy... making chili, cleaning, and doing copious amounts of laundry. This weekend I plan on making mini cherry pies and some parsnip soup mmm. There's something about Fall & Spring that just kick starts my soul.
